The "Fulmine" in the late 1930s, exiting the Gulf of La Spezia, in a heavily retouched photograph of "Studio Pucci", a quite famous photographers' firm active in La Spezia from the late XIX century until World War II. It appears that Fulmine was photographed moored at quay, as shown by the flag hoisted astern, lack of wake and - moreover - by the canvas cover positioned above the funnel uptake to prevent moisture entering in the boilers, as well as the accidental fall of objects inside. Then, the ship's image was "transferred" on a background showing the outer Gulf of La Spezia, adding small bow waves to simulate low speed. An excellent sample of photo retouching indeed, in an age when image digital processing techniques were still far in the future.
