BATTLECRUISER

The “ALASKA” class battlecruisers were the last U.S.Navy ships of this type built during WWII.
The names of the six scheduled ships came from protectorates or possessions of United States: ALASKA, GUAM, HAWAII, PHILIPPINES, PUERTO RICO and SAMOA; New York Shipbuildings Co. in Camden (New Jersey) was in charge to build the whole class.
Between December 1941 and December 1943 only ALASKA, GUAM and HAWAII were laid down whereas the contracts to build the other three ships were cancelled on 24 June 1943 because of balance and operational matters. The first two ships were commissioned on 17 June and 17 September 1944 respectively, while HAWAII was launched after the end of the war and, for several matters, was never commissioned nor entered active service.
