MONROSA

Il 25 ottobre 1941 il piroscafo Monrosa partì dal Pireo diretto a Creta con truppe, quadrupedi e
materiali della Divisione Siena, destinati a rafforzare la guarnigione dell’isola conquistata pochi mesi prima dai paracadutisti tedeschi con l’Operazione Merkur. Alle 13,18 veniva attaccato dal sommergibile inglese HMS Triumph e colpito da almeno due siluri affondò rapidamente a causa dello scoppio delle caldaie.
Perirono nell’affondamento 148 uomini fra soldati e marinai italiani.


On the 25th October 1941, the steamer Monrosa set sail from the Piraeus to Crete carrying troops, quadrupeds and materials of the Divisione Siena (Siena Division) to enforce the garrison of the island that was conquered few months before by the German paratroopers with the Merkur Operation.
At 13.18 it was attacked by the British Submarine HMS Triumph and hit by at least two torpedoes and sunk quickly with the explosion of the boilers.
During the sinking died 148 men among soldiers and Italian seamen.
