PROBITAS

Motonave Probitas

Motorship Probitas
Built in La Spezia in1919 on behalf of S.C.N. (Navigation National Society) by Muggiano Ansaldo Shipyard, building number 162, it had a length of about 120 meters, beam of 16 meters and a gross burden of over 5.000 tls. Called “Ansaldo San Giorgio I” it was used to carry emigrants and goods bound for atlantic ocean. Recalled “Probitas”, before 1928 its property passed to Nova Genuensis, an Industry and Sea-trade Joint-stock Company; in 1933 the new owner was Industry and Commission Joint-stock Company having registered office in Genoa too. At the outbreak of WWII it was requisitioned by Royal Italian Navy on September 23 1941 and used to carry troops towards different war scenes in Northern Africa.
Following September 8 1943 it was detached in Brindisi for repatriation of Italian troops from Dalmazia, Albany, Greece and border islands area. During the second voyage towards Albanian coasts, escorted by the corvette Sibilla and by torpedo-boat Stocco, together with the steamer Dubac and the motorship Salvatore, it headed towards Saranda (Albania) harbour to take on board all the troops standing there. On September 24 1943, Probitas reached the harbor having a trouble with propulsion so it was impossible to come back. Attacked four times by German airpcrafts Junker 87, it sank inexorable at about 5 p.m. in the middle of the roadstead.
Unfortunately the Perugia Division troops left behind; trying to reach Porto Palermo peninsula where other ships were available to get them back to homeland, they were cut off by the soldiers belonging to the first battalion of the 99th regiment of “Gebirgsjäger”, mountain light division, which in the period 4-7 October shot the Staff and all the Officers.
