CL. CAPITANI ROMANI

La classe “ATTILIO REGOLO” conosciuta anche come classe “CAPITANI ROMANI” fu l’evoluzione e conclusione progettuale della precedente classe Navigatori. Le unità dotate di un buon armamento e di elevata velocità (40 nodi!) furono la conseguente risposta per contrastare le nuove analoghe costruzioni navali francesi, alla fine degli anni ’30, delle classi Le Fantasque, (n. 6 unità) e Mogador (n. 2 Unità).
Le dodici realizzazioni previste (impostate nel 1939) vennero affidate ai cinque più importanti cantieri specializzati in costruzioni navali.
1. Oto di Livorno (4): ATTILIO REGOLO, SCIPIONE AFRICANO, CAIO MARIO, CLAUDIO TIBERIO;
2. Cantieri Navali Riuniti:
• Ancona (2): POMPEO MAGNO, OTTAVIANO AUGUSTO;
• Palermo (1): ULPIO TRAIANO;
3. Ansaldo di Genova (2): CORNELIO SILLA, PAOLO EMILIO;
4. Cantieri del Tirreno Riva Trigoso (2): CLAUDIO DRUSO, VIPSANIO AGRIPPA;
5. Navalmeccanica di Castellammare (1): GIULIO GERMANICO.
Solamente n.8 di queste riuscirono ad essere varate tra il 1940 e il 1942 (REGOLO, SCIPIONE, POMPEO, GERMANICO, TRAIANO, OTTAVIANO. CAIO MARIO E SILLA) ma solo le prime tre entrarono in servizio a cavallo degli anni 1942/43.
Le caratteristiche principali alla costruzione erano:
- lunghezza oltre i 142 mt. con un dislocamento superiore alle 5.000 ton.;
- n. 4 torri binate di cannoni da 135/45 OTO/Ansaldo;
- n. 8 cannoni da 37/53 Breda;
- n. 4 istallazioni binate di mitragliere da 20/70 della Scotti-Isotta-Fraschini;
- n. 2 installazioni quadruple di tubi lanciasiluri da 533 mm.
Le rimanenti 5 unità furono affondate negli anni 1943/44 dalle forze alleate o da quelle tedesche.
DRUSO, TIBERIO, EMILIO e AGRIPPA furono invece smantellati sugli scali prima del varo nei primi mesi del 1942.
Nel dopoguerra il POMPEO e il recuperato GERMANICO, a suo tempo affondato a Castellammare, rimessi in efficienza, costituirono la classe di caccia conduttori “S.GIORGIO”, prendendo il nome rispettivamente di SAN GIORGIO (D 562) e SAN MARCO (D 563).
Nel 1948 i sopravvissuti REGOLO e SCIPIONE furono ceduti alla Francia in conto riparazioni di guerra e ribattezzati Chateaurenault e Guichen.


The class "ATTILIO REGOLO" also known as class "CAPITANI ROMANI" was the evolution and design conclusion of the previous class Navigatori. The units equipped with a good armament and high speed (40 knots!) were the consequent response to counter the new similar french shipbuilding, at the end of the 30s, of the Le Fantasque (n. 6 units) and Mogador (n. 2 Units) classes.
The twelve planned constructions (set up in 1939) were entrusted to the five most important shipyards specialized in shipbuilding.

2. Shipyards Riuniti:
• Ancona (2): POMPEO MAGNO, OTTAVIANO AUGUSTO;
• Palermo (1): ULPIO TRAIANO;
3. Ansaldo di Genova (2): CORNELIO SILLA, PAOLO EMILIO;
4. Cantieri del Tirreno Riva Trigoso (2): CLAUDIO DRUSO, VIPSANIO AGRIPPA;
5. Navalmeccanica di Castellammare (1): GIULIO GERMANICO.
Only 8 of these were launched between 1940 and 1942 (REGOLO, SCIPIONE, POMPEO, GERMANICO, TRAIANO, OTTAVIANO. CAIO MARIO and SILLA) but only the first three were completed in the years 1942/43.
The main features to the construction were:
- length over 142 meters. with a displacement of more than 5,000 tons;
- n. 4 twin towers of 135/45 OTO/Ansaldo cannons;
- n. 8 37/53 Breda guns;
- n. 4 twin installations of 20/70 machine guns of Scotti-Isotta-Fraschini;
- n. 2 quadruple installations of 533 mm torpedo tubes.
The remaining 5 units were sunk in the years 1943/44 by Allied or German forces.
DRUSO, TIBERIO, EMILIO and AGRIPPA were dismantled on the slipways before their launch in early 1942.
In the post-war period the POMPEO and the recovered GERMANICO, at the time sunk in Castellammare, put back into efficiency, constituted the class of destroyers "S.GIORGIO", taking the name respectively of SAN GIORGIO (D 562) and SAN MARCO (D 563).
In 1948 the survivors REGOLO and SCIPIONE were ceded to France on account of war reparations and renamed Chateaurenault and Guichen.
